Fulbright Junior Staff Development Program

The Fulbright Junior Staff Development Program is aimed at individuals who already have at least a first degree and wish to proceed to do postgraduate studies. Such candidates must be affiliated with a professional or academic institution and must be Malawian citizens. This is a highly competitive program and Malawi may only forward five applications to the Institute of International Development (New York Office) where the final selection is made by a specially convened selection panel.

Advertisements appear in the newspapers during March/April for placement during the following academic year and applicants are required to complete a preliminary application form. Short listed candidates are interviewed during June/July and in October they sit for the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). Depending on the area of study, some candidates may also be required to sit for the GRE (Graduate Record Examinations).

Candidates must (1) be wishing to study for a Masters or Ph.D. program in their current field; (2) be Malawian citizens or permanent residents qualified to hold a valid Malawi passport; (3) have lived and worked in Malawi during the last 5 years; (4) have outstanding academic records, references and preparation in their chosen fields; and (5) a high level of English Proficiency.

Preference is given to candidates who have not previously studied in the U.S. Candidates who, at the time of application, have studied for six months or more in either the U.S.A. or another foreign country during the past five years, are ineligible.

The five finalists will, for insurance purposes, undergo a medical examination and complete the official application forms which are then forwarded to IIE.

Although many applications are received, many candidates fail to make the short-list simply because they do not read and follow instructions. Applicants are encouraged to closely follow instructions if they wish to be considered.
