The John F. Kennedy Memorial Information Resource Center

The John F. Kennedy Memorial Information Resource Center is the research and information service of the U.S. Embassy, Public Affairs Section.  The main aim is to reflect contemporary America to Malawi by providing general and specific information on American values, culture, history, U.S. policies and processes.

Membership is free and open to government officials, business people, academics, clergy, Non Governmental Organizations and the general public. Members must be residents in Malawi.  You can apply for the membership online by printing and completing the registration form.

Holdings

The JFK Memorial Information Resource Centre has a reference collection with 500 volumes, a circulation collection with approximately 4,000 books on economics, philosophy, history, government, literature, science and technology and a periodicals section containing 10 magazines and 39 titles of current print periodicals.  The Information Resource Center also includes the Mission's Commercial Information Resource Center which contains over 500 volumes of reference works.

On-line and CD ROMS

The JFK Memorial Information Resource Centre has a number of electronic databases that provide access to valuable information besides the Internet.

Through the State Department, the IRC has access to major in-house digital resources such as Factiva and Lexis-Nexis that provide access to abstracts and full text articles.  Staff will carry out reference queries for legal, business, government and academic professionals.  CD-Rom databases available in the IRC include Street Atlas USA, America Presidents, National Trade Database; Time Almanac of the 20th Century, the Penguin Hutchson Reference Library and the US State Fact Book among others.

The Department of State Bureau of Information also publishes online journals based on the Mission Program Plan goals such as the economy, democratic governance and the US society and values.

Lending Services
Members of the IRC can borrow books for a period of two weeks and after which they can either return or renew the books.  Clients are not allowed to use the periodicals and references materials out with the IRC.

The IRC staff provides reference and research assistance utilizing the available information resources. Queries are accepted by telephone, e-mail, fax or in person during working hours.
